In 2015 December, Team Billion Beats launched a campaign called #Justice4GuruKalam in association with change.org. This was after news reports showed cattle and dogs defecating in the burial place of Guru Kalam at Pei Karumbu in Rameswaram, shocking millions of his followers.
In the months that followed, the campaign gained momentum, and lakhs of Guru Kalam’s supporters joined the mission on social media.
Finally, the government took note of the massive people’s movement and directed the Defence Research and Development Organisation to undertake work on a memorial for Guru Kalam at the site.
A strong fencing came up at the memorial site and a foundation stone signalling the beginning of the work was laid on the first death anniversary of Guru Kalam. The work is in full swing and Phase-1 of the memorial expected to be inaugurated on July 27, 2017.
In March 2017, we noticed that the official Twitter handle and Facebook page of Guru Kalam were tampered with and changed to another name by a group.
The family wrote to ‘a part-time helper’ of Guru Kalam, who was handling these accounts when Guru Kalam was alive. While the family wanted the rights to operate these handles, the said ‘part-time helper’ migrated all followers of Guru Kalam’s official Twitter handle to another account, leaving everyone shocked.
The family has also taken objection to him claiming to be Guru Kalam’s advisor, while no such post existed.
#ReturnOurPresident is a campaign aimed at getting back all official social media accounts of Guru Kalam so that his family can operate them under the Kalam Foundation.
It would also help to stop people from misusing his name. The campaign is set to gain momentum in the coming days, with the family wanting to get a response to their requests first.
